Reade House, Suffolk
Refurbishment
Built in 1893 to a design by John Saville, Reade house was originally a large home for a family and staff enjoying sea views. Since then it has been used as a school, a care home and most recently council offices, seeing various alterations and additions yet still keeping its gothic charm.
Our proposals return the building to residential use though the creation of 8 flats. The design process has included historical research at local archives to find old images and the original plans.
The design has received very positive comments from East Suffolk’s Conservation Officer, Felixstowe Town Council, and the Felixstowe Society who say they are
‘Particularly impressed with the comprehensive Design, Access, and Heritage Statement which not only provides light on the history of the building but also explains in detail the aims and objectives of the design philosophy.’
‘The proposed scheme of conversion has been carefully and sensitively designed and maintains those important elements that contribute to the significance of this heritage asset’
Whilst there is little known about the practice of John Saville, we discovered he was the Clerk of Works on the construction of Gilbert Scotts St Pancras Hotel, some 25 years before designing Reade House. The gothic revival style of the hotel clearly had an impact on his design for this Felixstowe house.
The development will provide new homes and secure the future of this historic building, allowing the gothic revival grandeur to be enjoyed for years to come.
